Cambodian Sustainable Housing 2013


Slope Roof House
Cambodia has one of the highest economic growth rates. The recent rate was more than 6 percent.
In spite of the high economic growth, Housing supply ratio is less than 50 percent.
In addition, Current growing population rate in Cambodia is the fastest level in the world as about 4 percent.
Additionally considering rapid movement into city, it would be continued that the housing demand ratio exceeds its supply ratio.
These issues will make polarization between Housing of Phnom Penh and Housing in its suburb.
In this situation, In order to enhance housing life for people who live in the suburb, the proposal of design is to a
dvance existing traditional house with new contexts.

The most land in Cambodia is flat land (about 75% of the total). The site of Phnom Penh is almost flat land too.
Thus proposing proto-type model on the basis of flat land is somewhat general. And the feature of this site could be found in the road plan.
The road plan in Phnom Penh follows orthogonal system. It means that dweller’s life style could be influenced by this system.
So suggesting of proto-type model as architectonic point has to be influenced by the block planning
which is divided automatically by the road planning.

Generally Cambodian family structure is fundamentally nuclear structure (The structure in which parents support their children).
As circumstances change, the family members is extended to their aged parents

Phnom Penh’s climate is generally tropical monsoon. Therefore, it tends to be hot year-round with minor variations.
The average temperature is between 28 to 33 degrees Celsius. And the city experiences the heaviest precipitation from
September to October with the driest period occurring from January to February.
Two distinct seasons. The rainy season, which runs from May to October, can see temperatures rise up to 40 °C around April and
is generally accompanied with high humidity.
The dry season lasts from November to April when temperatures can drop to 22 °C. The best comfortable months are
November to January when temperatures and humidity are lower.

Design Strategy
Easy assemble structure
Timber frame structure is used for main structure of slope roof house.
This structure is relatively easy to assemble by unskilled worker and material is more common than concrete or steel.
Roof material is corrugated metal panel, which is easy to handle.

Local Material
Bamboo is used for interior wall finishing. Bamboos are stacked up horizontally and supported by wooden frame.
Since bamboo is not a structural element, it can be replaced anytime in low cost.

Rain water reuse
Sloped roof is for reuse rain water. Rain water is collected into storage tank at kitchen through natural purifying system.
Natural purifying system is consists of sand, charcoal, and gravel. Purified water will be used for toilet and kitchen.

Natural Ventilation
Since the shape of lot is narrow and linear, ventilation of mass is not in good condition. Proposing main entrance in the middle make better
ventilation by bisecting kitchen area and bedroom area.
Also, since front of house are two story heights, high ceiling help to make better air circulation.

Future Expansion
Front corner is designed as open deck and in case of expanding; this space could be used for expanded bed room.

Local Tradition
The traditional housing form is tended to keep distance about 1~2 meter from land to keep themselves and their house from
high temperature over 35 degree celcius and disease from bugs in the dry season and flooding in the rainy season.
We adapted this tradition and reapply to our design.
