Aachen 1995

It was Aachen, Germany, where our client, who has been in a coffee business over 30 years, first met Meissen porcelains on his business trip to Europe. Since that time, he has started to collect Meissen porcelains on his business trip or buy them from auctions. It became a small dream to have a small café, where Meissen porcelains and old European tin toys are displayed and traded. As his son became 20years old, he decided to start his small dream under the name of Aachen 1995, when his son was born.

The location of small café is on the first floor of the mixed used building, where is surrounded by the apartment complexes.  Since it faces a small street, it is a relatively quiet place. However, there are existing cafes around that place, strong iconic design to catch eyes from the street is needed to emphasize Meissen porcelains and old European tin toys.

After we heard about the story of Meissen porcelains, we researched Meissen town and found beautiful images of the Albrechtsburg Castle. It has gorgeous arches inside. That image became our motif of the design to a reinterpretation of arches in a modern way. After reviewing various places, the showcase, which is the most important design element to display Meissen porcelains, was placed in the middle of the space. By this manner, the space was divided into two parts and half arches were growing from the showcase to the end of the ceiling. Half space was filled with fixed bench seats, tables and chairs to have a feeling inside of the Albrechtsburg Castle.  The other side of the space was composed with bar counter style showcase and bar chairs under the arch ceiling.

Finishing materials and color were selected to be clean and tranquil atmosphere. The walls are painted as vintage green-gray color and the pendants are shining like brass. White arches imply medieval castle and evoke curiosity. Porcelains and tin toys, which have their own history, make this small space, grandeur with Polaris marble stone finished counter and a ponderous analogue coffee machine.
